NedTrain's Leidschendam plant was the location where the first Dutch electrical rolling stock was maintained. Originally it belonged to the independent ZHESM (Zuid Hollandsche Elektrische Spoorweg Maatschappij, Southern Holland's Electrical Railway Company). The book was issued on the occasion of the plant's centenary in 2008. The book is essentially a photo essay on the history of the plant. Avoiding dull and elaborate detail it describes the history in apt photographs and pointed texts. Photo quality is generally good. Quality of historical footage varies widely from very crisp to poor, the latter marred by moire or unsharpness. Nevertheless I think the editors and the author did a great job for the purpose it was written: to commemorate the 100th anniversary of electrical rolling stock maintenance in Leidschendam. A true feat indeed, for I don't know any place else in the world which was conceived from the very start exclusively for this purpose and still continues to operate until today and on the same location. The book is a fitting memorial to that. I'm proud to have it in my collection. Thank you Johannes!! |
