The first frame was built inside out!!
Without realising I built up the first frame on the worng side of the etch plate. There were two hints in the manual that should have alarmed me
- Unless stated, all half-etched fold lines bend with the line inside the fold.
- Where it has not proved possible to half etch the surface of the component leaving rivet or beading detail standing proud, tiny halfetched holes appear on the inside of certain components. These are guides for your rivetting tool, and rivet or bolt detail is easily embossed using firm downward pressure with the component lying on a sheet of ordinary writing paper supported on a firm surface.
Now take a closer look. The frame is folded the other way, and the etched holes are on the outside!!. I did notice that this frame was to be folded "the wrong way" but I didn't heed that thought and simply folded it.
There was one tell tale that told me the sad truth: the notches on the front side of the frame plates (left on the photo, vertical before the five etcehd holes) didn't quite fit in the corresponding slots in the buffer beam. That was peculiar because the kit had been high acurate so far....
When I set out building the second frame I found out my error. It don't dare to unfold it and fold it over though. I decided to leave it, hoping that the few extra tents of millimeter do not cause trouble in the later process.
