N&W J-class

J-class - Assessment

Condition as bought

A bit dusty, but obvious external damage. And the coupling rods are in an awkward position.

First finding: loose superstructure

When I picked up the loco at the trade show I felt the superstructure wanted to lift of from the front end. So the first finding was that the front end screw was missing.

Second finding: out of quartering

The second notable finding was very obvious:

The lady broke a leg!!
And the other leg as well....
Seriously, but in true British understatement: there is a little amiss with the quartering

Third finding: coupler loose

The coupling between locomotive proper and tender fell out and the screws present where not able to keep the coupling in place. Nothing terrible, a few washers are easy to make.

Fourth finding: motor runs

I aapplied some current and the motor did what is was destined to do: run.

Conclusion

There is no apparent real damage to the loco, other than a few blemishes on the paint work, which is hardly surprising after 40 years. The few mechanical things amiss seem to be repairable but the quartering problem might just well be the killer. We'll see. I will take the loco apart and go for a repair.
